Our current advertisement solution is less than perfect. It's a mix of using the ShoutWikiAds extension for placement and using Ezoic's built in tools to disable ads on certain pages, namespaces, or directories, and also for disabling advertisements for logged in users via detection of CentralAuth cookies.
This is less than perfect, as it means that we cannot have separate advertisements that for example, show for logged in users, whilst the others don't. With rising costs, this needs to change and is unsustainable. We need to write our own extension that handles everything, from displaying the advertisements to hiding them etc. This way, we don't need to rely on outside tools.
With rising costs, we must also display at least one advertisement for logged in users on wikis, which should generate enough income to cover costs and allow for a little extra room for upgrades etc. I'm propsosing that this goes in the left sidebar on Vector — where it currently is anyway for logged out readers — and also in the left of the content area for the Telepedia skin. We must also introduce this for Vector-2022 (although placement may be a bit iffy on this one) and any other skins that we're supporting.
